Heamatology

A fully equipped and automated haematology lab allowing for routine haematology along with a specialist testing menu, including bone marrow analysis; such as:

  • Bone Marrow Aspirate reporting
  • Flow cytometry
  • Trephine processing/reporting

Our flow cytometry platform is available to support oncology diagnostics and other immunological diseases, including HIV monitoring (CD4/ CD8).

Advanced Molecular Testing, in collaboration with multinational centres if required, includes advanced FISH/ Molecular and Karyotypic analysis of both benign and malignant haematological conditions.

Biochemistry and Serological Testing

  • A fully equipped and automated biochemistry lab performing routine Biochemistry alongside a Special Test Menu;
  • HPLC method for HBAIC;
  • NIPT (Non-invasive Prenatal Screening);
  • Downs Screening Trisomy 21 Double, Triple and Quadruple;
  • DNA/RNA genomic testing for all Disease portfolio;
  • Cancer Markers using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS);
  • LCMSMS, (Tandem Mass Spectrometry);
  • Immunosuppressant, Anti-fungal, Steroids and Biogenic Amines.

Virology

Highly advanced and skilled with the most experienced virologists (whose training was obtained at John Hopkins, Harvard and CDC, WHO) the test menu is by far the most superior, including and not limited to: HPLC Mass Spec Detection for Antiretroviral Adherence testing, NGS Advanced testing, Multiplex ICU Respiratory testing and GI testing.

The laboratory has the prestige of being able to laud itself as the centre of choice for collaboration with the largest research organisation in South Africa.

    Microbiology

    From day-to-day diagnostic testing for infectious diseases to the latest specialised, esoteric testing required by other hospitals, the centre has been integrated into healthcare delivery networks, also serving as a centralised referral centre for clinical trials. Fitted with the Malditof Mass Spec, turnaround time has been reducing from days to mere hours.

    Histopathology

    Internationally, the histopathology division is equipped with the most modern technology, including:

    • Extensive expertise in Anatomic and Histopathology including Nephropathology,
    • Neuropathology, Oncopathology, Hepatopathology and Cytology.
    • Digital Pathology – Use of technology to allow virtual slides to be examined and reported.
      This essentially eliminates the need to transport glass slides between locations. Storage, quality assurance, collaboration, teaching and much more, becomes seamless and efficient.
    • Data Science driven value addition. Using current data to identify patterns that recognise diseases/outliers earlier than a human intervention could. Decreasing noise and enhancing signal.

    Our in-house Histology laboratory offers a diagnostic service to both the private and public sectors.

    Mass Spec Technology

    LCMSMS, (Tandem Mass Spectrometry) Immunosuppressant, Anti-fungal, Steroids, Biogenic Amines and Vitamins.

    Molecular Biology

    Commonly used in the diagnosis of cancer and infectious diseases, techniques include: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR), multiplex PCR, DNA Microarray, In Situ Hybridisation, DNA Sequencing, Antibody based Immunofluorescence Tissue Assays, Molecular Profiling of Pathogens and analysis of Bacterial genes for Antimicrobial Resistance.

      Proteomics

      Next Generation Mass Spectrometry based Proteomics Assays are on the rise. Common Analysis are: Newborn Screening, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of Immunosuppressant, Vitamin D, Steroids  and Bacterial identification.

      Techniques include:

      Bioinformatics

      Advances in Genomic and Proteomic Science over the past decade have led to “targeted” diagnostics and therapeutics being developed that leverage knowledge of an individual’s genetic make-up to create a more personalized approach to healthcare.

      Genomic Testing enables us to identify an individual’s susceptibility to disease, predict how a given patient will respond to a particular drug and match patients with the right therapeutics.
